News
Well-known illustrator passes away: Children’s book illustrator Pauline Baynes passed away on August 1, at the age of 85. Baynes — best known for illustrating J. R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and all seven volumes of C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia — has illustrated many Eerdmans’ books, including Questionable Creatures and The Elephant’s Ball. In the fall of 2009, Eerdmans will release one of Baynes’ final projects, a book of illustrations of selections from the Qur’an. Read her obituaries in The Guardian and The Independent.
Authors of the Month: Janice and Tim Shefelman, the author and illustrator of Eerdmans’ I, Vivaldi, have been selected to be the September Authors of the Month at the Austin, TX, area Barnes & Noble locations. A special booksigning event will take place on Saturday, September 6th at 2:00 p.m. in the Round Rock Barnes & Noble Store.

Catholic Press Awards: Five Eerdmans titles garnered honors in the annual Catholic Press Association awards. Winners included Welcome to the Wisdom of the World and Its Meaning for You by Joan Chittister in spirituality and

History Award: The San Diego Book Awards Association, a volunteer organization dedicated to enriching the large, diverse, and vibrant literary community of the San Diego county, has awarded the 2008 history prize to What Are the Dead Sea Scrolls and Why Do They Matter? by David Noel Freedman and Pam Fox Kuhlken.
Abraham Kuyper Prize: Congratulations to Eerdmans author Oliver O'Donovan. He has received the 2008 Abraham Kuyper Prize for Excellence in Reformed Theology and Public Life from Princeton Theological Seminary. The award recognizes a scholar or community leader who has contributed to the development of Reformed theology, particularly as it bears on matters of public life.
